Pain is a very common symptom. Approximately 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain (Institute of Medicine, 2011). Millions of individuals experience acute pain (lasting six months or less) due to conditions like cancer, trauma, surgery, or even common injuries like sprained ankles or stubbed toes. Anxiety often accompanies pain, particularly in cases of serious diagnoses such as cancer or heart disease, adding an emotional dimension to the physical experience. (Thrane & Cohen, 2014).
Chronic pain often results in the activation of the body’s stress response, leading to tense muscles, increased inflammation, and reduced circulation. This physiological stress exacerbates the pain. Reiki helps to reverse this cycle by stimulating the body’s parasympathetic nervous system—the part of the nervous system responsible for relaxation and healing. According to a review on Reiki’s impact on pain management, Reiki can reduce cortisol levels (a stress hormone) and promote a state of relaxation that helps the body release tension and ease pain. Chronic pain isn't just physical—it often carries emotional weight, too. Many with chronic pain also face emotional distress, including depression, anxiety, and frustration, which can amplify pain experience. Reiki facilitates the mind-body connection by creating a mindful, meditative environment where patients can focus on their healing without judgment. Just as in Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, where different parts of ourselves are recognized and worked through, Reiki gently brings awareness to our painful parts, allowing them to be acknowledged and healed. This focused attention can unearth repressed memories or emotions that have been stored over time, offering an opportunity for gentle acknowledgment or further examination/release. A qualitative study found that during a Reiki treatment participants felt “dreamy,” “safe,” “secure,” and “more grounded” (Ring, 2009, p. 255). The sense of safety and grounding experienced during and after Reiki sessions helps individuals process emotions, easing the mental strain often associated with chronic pain. A greater sense of control and emotional well-being also helps reduce feelings of helplessness. This emotional and psychological shift is vital for the long-term management of chronic pain, as it breaks the cycle of fear, anxiety and helplessness that can make pain feel more intense. Incorporating Reiki into your chronic pain management routine is not a substitute for medical treatment, but it can be an important complement to traditional approaches. Reiki is effective when combined with other holistic practices such as meditation, mindfulness, or Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). When used alongside physical therapy, medication, or other holistic therapies, Reiki’s ability to enhance the body’s natural healing process can bring lasting benefits, especially in patients who may not have responded well to solely conventional treatments. Many clients report feeling deeply relaxed during and after a session. Some experience immediate relief from their pain, while for others, the benefits develop over several sessions. Here is a great testimonial from a client. A study of nurses who use Reiki therapy for self-care found that the nurses used Reiki therapy during their workday to feel more calm, centered, and more able to care for others (Vitale, 2009). Consistency is key when using Reiki as part of your pain management plan. It’s not uncommon for people with chronic pain to incorporate Reiki into their weekly or biweekly routines as part of an ongoing self-care practice.
