"People who know how to self-motivate, according to studies, earn more money than their peers, report higher levels of happiness and say they are more satisfied with their families, jobs and lives" says author, Charles Duhigg.
Most of what we do on a daily basis may seem like well thought out actions. But they are not. They are habits. Habits are decisions we consciously made at one time but then the choices become automatic, often every day. Our brains are always looking for ways to save effort. Over time the habit of what meals we eat, how much we spend, whether we exercise of no; have enormous bearing on our wealth, financial security, health, productivity and happiness.
So that being true, what stops us from making new, healthy habits? Maybe we drown ourselves in negative self talk - the thoughts become self-fulfilling prophesies - they prevent us from taking any action - is this sounding familiar?
Negative self talk and procrastination is probably what holds us back from anything we want to do in life. It is easy to get motivated at the beginning of the year or when a birthday ends with a five or zero. We make huge life changing goals, read a couple of self-help books and then feel good about it for a while. Come time to do what we planned, we make excuses . . ."what makes me think that I will succeed this time?" or "I will go _________ (fill in your goal's first step) tomorrow /as soon as I clear this clutter / when I feel a bit better".
Here is the question of the moment: Has making changes worked for you so far?
If it did, then you wouldn't still be here, reading this article :).
Thinking about what will feel good is very different from actually doing what is good. Making changes means taking action. . . consistently; and putting into place a system that holds one accountable every step of the way. A time tested way to succeed.
Expecting to achieve your goal of setting and maintaining positive habits is absolutely practical and possible - with the right strategy. You can be smarter, faster and better. “All our life, so far as it has definite form, is but a mass of habits.”
