Hypnosis is a ridiculously misunderstood concept. It seems far fetched and scary to many, that some stranger can say "you are feeeeling verrry sleeeepy" or "no matter how HAARD you try, you cannot open your eyes" and it works! No one wants to give over mind-body control to another person. Let me explain why you are always in control and why suggestions made during hypnosis work.
Wikipedia defines hypnosis as a human condition involving focused attention, reduced peripheral awareness, and an enhanced capacity to respond to suggestion.
In an effort to be efficient and save energy, our active mind tries to automate responses to events. For instance, we believe that the barista knows what he is doing when they hand us our coffee or the driver of the car in front of us knows the rules of the road.
That means when you come in for hypnosis, you already hold a belief that you intend to change and the change you want is possible. A good hypnotist finds a way past the active, protective mind to suggest to your subconscious that this change is the new truth and as you yourself deduced, is for your highest good. Now why are some changes easy on our own and others we find hard despite will-power?
Most of what we do on a daily basis may seem like well thought out actions. But they are not. They are habits. Habits are decisions we consciously made at one time but then the choices become automatic, often every day. Before you know it, your "habitual mindset" unconsciously determines how we live our lives, what meals we eat, how much we spend, whether we exercise or not, but has an enormous bearing on our wealth, financial security, health, productivity and happiness.
The function of your subconscious mind is to store and retrieve data. Its job is to ensure that you respond exactly the way you are programmed and hence not spend too much energy evaluating and calculating risk for every move. It does not think or reason independently; it merely obeys the commands it receives from your conscious mind. Your conscious mind can be thought of as the captain of a ship; your subconscious mind can be thought of as the 1st engineer, in the engine room of the ship. Your conscious mind (ship captain) commands and your subconscious mind (1st engineer) obeys. So the subconscious makes you feel physically and emotionally uncomfortable whenever you want to do something different; in an effort to obey orders to keep you safe within an established comfort zone. In order to create change we must convince the subconscious of its safety and validity.
The subconscious mind is active when your conscious mind is relaxed and not fully peripherally aware (not in alert mode) and operating on a lower frequency than beta. And that my friends, is where, healing modalities come in - be it Reiki or Acupuncture or Hypnosis - although different in their methods - they effect intuitive healing at different frequencies in the brain. Hypnosis is one of the modalities that has been able to reach the subconscious reliably faster to help reprogram previous conditioned behavior. Changing the current tape that is playing and replacing it with the newly desired behavior will get your brain to be in line with your true desires, dreams, and life goals or manage disease or pain.
Free yourself from self-limiting beliefs – or doubts and preconceptions programmed by experiences or caregivers or society in general.
